Nachtway and his brother are well-known war photographers.
Eugene Smith (or perhaps his mother - jury still out on that one) photographed the image of the 2 young children holding hands, walking away from the camera, through an arch of low hanging branches.
Margaret Bourke-Smith, famous photographer from the 30s and 40s. She was an industrialist photographer for the WPA.
Dorothea Lange worked for the gov't (branch?) during the Depression. Her pictures of migrant and homeless are heartbreaking.
Annie Liebowitz, still active, photographer of the rich and famous. She does this very well and is highly sought after. She also does cutting-edge fashion photography.

I could only think of Ansel Adams, but thanks for sparking that curiosity in me. Now I will find out more about famous photographers since it is something I really enjoy doing.
