As far as I know the Lessee is the one responsible for the rent, they signed the contract with the Lessor. However, depending on the contract you signed as the sub-lessee, you may have accepted responsibility for your portion of the lease. However if you are being asked to pay for the full amount, I doubt that is legal, you have signed no contract to that effect. At least I hope you didn't. Read your contract really carefully and see what exactly you agreed to.

If they're just after you because the other guy didn't pay and are trying to push you into it, then no, it's not legal.

It may not be in your lease, but I suspect that the landlord wants to get paid, so he is eliminating the middle man. Why don't you just have a lease with the landlord? If you are subleasing and paying your lease on time, but the leasee isn't paying on time, you are at risk of losing your place, so in fact the landlord is doing you a favor. With the lease, the law would be who the lease and sublease was made out to, the conditions of when the rent is due. It probably doesn't say anything in the original lease about who SHOULD be paying the landlord, it will just state the day it is due. So to be technical, if you are not paying your rent on time because of the leasee, it is in fact you who is breaking the lease. Good luck!

End the original lease and just lease to the subleasee.
