Because they feel, after all the harm that was caused by another person that one deserves payback, as like saying what comes around goes around. Getting even teaches a lesson I guess, but sometimes some go too far and over-exaggerate what someone did to them.

Those that attempt to get even with another person for what ever the reason, tend to get back 10 times what they have initiated against a person for what ever the reason. Most times they are not justified in their vindictiveness. It makes them look cheap, shallow and without character or morals. They have tribal mentality and are from the neolithic period of thinking.

Women usually attempt to slander other females, when they are jealous, threatened by the stronger female, filled with envy and malice. It leads to their own self destruction. Not to mention all those age lines! :-) What is in them starts to reflect on the outside, making them look much older than they really are. The people they oppose are laughing at them anyway. A mature person should want to grow up and get over it and themselves.

I don't think it's a conscious decision all the time. I think there are lots of people who have passive/aggressive personalities and they are prone to be very vindictive. But also, there are plenty of people who are just really hurt or angry and the think the only way that that pain can be fixed is to give it back to someone else. Maybe it's a form of transference.

I think it is usually because people want justice and they feel like taking it into their own hands and getting revenge is the only way to truly get that justice.

Because we think someone hurt us without Just Cause. And that's not on our Fairness chart! It's not fair and neither is life.
You have to control the need for revenge just as you have to control your lust. We control it for society's sake. If it is just too unfair, then I guess we will eventually have our revenge. @8-)

because it is satisfying. Pretty much, it's human nature to feel that way, doesnt mean everyone is going to act on it but they definently feel the urge to do it.
