we are 2 divorced parents with 1 child. i am interested in knowing if it is possible to have 2 passports issued when the initial application is submited? The concern here is this; the parent now wanting to take the child out of the country, which is fine. but, this same co-parent will come home after the trip and retain the 1 and only original passport, and dependign on the mood they are in, the other parent is held hostage if they too want to take the child on a trip out of the country. So, the question is, this; is it possible to have 2 passports issued at the same time after recievng inital application?the passport agency requires 2 signatures from the parents, which must be notarized before submitting to passport agency in order to obtain the 1 passport for the child. So, it seems only reasonable that if the parents would each like to have one passport, so they dont have to ask and risk being held hostage, by power/control trips,.Can anyone let me know if it is possible to get 2?

No, you only get one passport. However, the best thing for you to do is to find a neutral third party who holds on to the passport for you both. Or perhaps a bank deposit box that requires two keys to open it.

If you are successfully sharing custody one parent having the passport should not be considered holding it "hostage." You need to work together for the benefit of the child. If you do find yourself in the future in a situation where you need the passport and the other parent will not give it to you - you may have to get a court order.

Good luck.

Well, it shouldn't be a "hostage situation". If one parent has the passport, and the other wishes to take a trip that would require the passport, then the parent should just give the person the passport.

To deny the passport because they "disapprove" is just immature and sad really.

I do not think a person can have two valid passports, therefore the parents will just have to learn to act in a mature manner.

Also, both parents must give consent for the child to be issued a passport. If I thought this would be an issue, I would not consent to the passport.

Last I heard you can only have one passport, I pretty sure that isn't going to change. As for taking a child out of the country, most states require agreement from both parents before you can leave. if you allow the other to take the child, you might want something in writting about to let you do the same.

You know... My husband had an illegitimate child with his ex. They have shared custody but she never lets him see the son - although my husband never took her to court. The ex took the son on a trip out of the country without obviously my husbands signature - I think anything seems possible. The embassy doesn't seem to be strict but this is something you should bring up with your lawyer. If you don't have one, get one because there shouldn't be any power trips going on. This is your child who will feel trapped in the middle. The problem is not the passport but its the other parent - you shouldn't have signed any paperwork to begin with if this is what will happen.

in a way I would say no because of 911. But then i want to say yes because there are so many fake passports out there. I can't imagine when you applied for the passports they didn't have a contact # that you could ask.

regrettably, it really isn't any longer a possibility. The passport belongs to the newborn (no matter if the newborn would not administration it even as a minor) no longer to you men. and prefer everyone else, a baby in common words receives one after the different. the aptitude for fraud is too tremendous. you may document a passport stolen if the different figure refuses to allow you to get admission to to it... both figure can attempt this. or you may refuse to signal off on the employing without some coverage (both criminal or personal) that you will be allowed get admission to to it. Or both of you may comply with act like rational adults.
