Secure a piece of cardboard over 1/2 of the front of the radiator, out of the way of any fans.
Whatever you do, do not thin your antifreeze with more water, antifreeze lowers the freeze up temp, and raises the heat ability before turning to steam. Both good things.

This model had problems with the heater controls on the dash. Some were plastic and broke. Make sure the water control valve is opening all the way. Look under dash when moving the temp lever. Sometimes they just get out of adjustment. Also check that lever controling outside air or recirculate is operating correctly. There is a band that holds the ducting under the passenger side dash. If it is loose or has moved to one side, cold air can get in before getting to the heater core.

You did not say how heat the heat was.
1. Changing your thermostat for a higher temperature is good for cold weather.
2. Replace your heater core. It does not cost that much. I presume the car is around a 1990 model more or less, and definitely could change cores as it may be a little clogged up by now.

Don't listen to that one guy that says more water makes your car run warmer. Its the opposite. Water is what cools your car, antifreeze is what prevents the coolant from freezing. Try replaceing your thermostat. Its like 5 dollars for the part and 15 for labor. Take it to a midas or somthing. IF that doesnt work, thennnn replace your heater core. Do not do it yourself because you have to take the whole dash apart and its a nightmare putting it back together.

You can find out if your parts store has a thermostat with a slightly higher heat range.
