I think that it is used as a specific individual identifier. If a name has already been taken by someone else, but you really want to use it, you can modify the name by adding the X's. Thus changing the name to suit your purpose.

the x's dont mean anything really-it just add space
if it is used as xoxoxo it means hugs(x) & kisses(o)
