The book was written by Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, with the pseudonym of Lewis Carroll. He wrote it for Alice Pleasance Liddell who I believe was his niece.

The "drug reference" that keeps coming up is from the 1960s something song "White Rabbit" written by Jefferson Airplane, which makes reference to Alice on drugs. It was not the intent of the original story and had nothing to do with it.

Although accusations of drug use and pedophilia are common answers, I believe Carrol was attempting to comment on the demands placed on children of the Victorian era by their parents, particularly the expectation that they act like well mannered mini- adults.
