A trial can result in a number of legal consequences:

If the factual disputes of a trial are decided by a jury, their decision is called the "verdict" (e.g. "guilty").

If the dispute is settled by a judge, the facts and law together are resolved in an "opinion" which concludes with a verdict. The judge's opinion is a discussion of the evidence, his conclusions as to the facts, the applicable law and the result of applying the correct law appropriately to the facts as he sees them.

In a civil suit, if the judge or jury awards a party damages (money or property), the amount is called an "award" or "judgement." To collect the judgement, the winning party must "perfect" and "execute" the judgement.

In a criminal trial, the judge may send a guilty party to confinement, parole or another punishment or therapy. This is called a "sentence."

Hope this helps!

The verdict. A judgment is rendered based upon the verdict. This is more particularly true in a criminal court but also applies to any jury trial. The jury renders the verdict and the court issues the judgment based upon the verdict. If there is not jury, then the judge simply gives his judgment on the case.
