The reason is because the curvture of the total mass of the earth which includes the atmospehre has increased . So pressure of gravity is inversely proportion to curvature.There fore atmospheric pressure decreases exponentially as altitude increases and depends very much on the temperature of the air.

Because of the weight of the air above it is decreasing as well.

Atmosphere is a gas, and compresses under pressure. In this case, it is the cumulative weight (pressure) of the column of atmosphere above it that increases the density of the atmosphere at ground level.

The same reason the ocean has more pressure at the bottom than at the surface....gravity.
