You need to look at the Crab as a symbol. Most obviously it associated with one of the astrological signs - Cancer. It also appears on the tarot card "The Moon".

Traditionally, the crab is associated with the moon, the feminine principle and water. In tarot, the Moon card is traditionally a sign of disaster and madness. Astrologers have connected the movement of Saturn through Cancer with a number of disasters, most notably the detonation of the first atomic bomb and an outbreak of plague (see Wikipedia).

By checking the index for "The Woman's Encyclopedia Of Myths and Secrets" (Barbara G. Walker,1986), I found out that the "Crab" refers specifically the astrological symbol Cancer. Its on page 183 of the book. Try researching that area and you should find enough material to answer your question. Try looking in a public library or bookshop for the book, if you want to read the entry.

Good luck!

To presage means "to warn" - so the crab was warning of some future event, or was itself a bad omen of what was to come.
