Does the waterproofing spray they sell at shoe stores really work? How effective is it?

I have a really expensive pair of suede boots, and I would like to be able to wear them on snowy days without damaging them. Will those sprays really work?

they do work for a little while but don't last forever

Silicone spray works but its lasting life is small Suede is a paraticularly difficult fabric to waterproof with spray.
The nap prevents deep penetration so you have to be sure to wipe it in properly,even then it is a risk
