I will always have fond childhood memories of watching the hippies have love-ins in Jackson Square, taking the nickel bus uptown to shop at Maison Blanche for a new Easter dress, going to mass with my mom and the City Park race track with my dad (!), artisanal shops in Rue Royal where the staff used to whisper in French (in those days there were no t-shirt shops and the only way you got beads was by having a family member in a krewe or standing on the parade route), picking up crayfish in the back yard after it rained, cooking them in a big pot and sucking the heads, going down to the docks and shucking oysters right out of the net, my parents taking me to Brennans for my birthday, being woken up at 2am to go down to the Morning Call and drinking hot chocolate and eating beignets, seeing my parents roll in from a night out watching Al Hirt's band play at Pat O'Briens (when it was still a nightclub with live jazz) and the crazy old spinster who used to babysit us, who used to dye her poodle's hair purple green and gold every Mardi Gras...

I could NEVER hate NO, but going back in later years did depress me. If anything good comes from Katrina, maybe they can get some of the stuff back that made it such a special place 40 years ago...

Love it. Don't like all the hurrincane transplants crowding up my city, but whatever. New Orleans is fun and theres never a dull moment. I live close enough to just go when I want, so that's great. What made you hate it so much?

I've only been there once, taking a pre-Katrina cruise out of New Orleans. The city was filthy, the people were alternatingly stupid and arrogant....and I got that impression from both whites and blacks...no racial thing going, just the people I dealt with in the city overall. I wasn't even impressed with the French Quarter, but weren't there during a major event like Mardi Gras, so I guess when it's "normal" it's not all that impressive.

I haven't seen enough of it to say I hate the whole entire city, but what I did see (the French Quarter, about 10 year or so ago) was nasty and repulsive. It wasn't so much the social decadence that offended me as it was the actual physical filth of the place. I couldn't WAIT to take a long hot shower.

New orleans used to be a great place to go to..

but its proven over & over. that most of the city should never have been built.

We all know that a katrina like event will be repeated.
Anybody living there now is a fool, they will lose everything yet again.

A cities capability to bounce back is not relevant in like/disklike.
In fact this is one city that never ever should have been built.

I like NOLA. I've been twice and the people are nice and the food is great. Photography is perfect hobby for that city.

I took a really fun airboat ride last trip. It was real thrill for my BF.
I could have a beignet right now.

How can anyone hate a city that has been through what it has been through and is trying to bounce back. If you don't like the city they don't want your business. Just stay home....
