Too many factors to really consider. Santana is the best, I think that's pretty safe to say. He's consistency at this level for the past several season is just a cut above. But after that, who's to say. Do you base it off 2006 only? Trends for the past few seasons? Career? An arguement can be made for so many players. Clemens, Petitte, Pedro, Carpenter, Schmidt, Schilling.... Go to Relief picthers. Papelbon was insane last year, but is unproven. Is anyone happy to be facing Mariano Rivera...ever? K-Rod has been pretty unhittable since he dominated the Yanks in the 2002 WS.

So most likely the answer comes down to personal preference of team. Having said that...Papelbon. Then Schilling, Dice-K, Wakefield, and Beckett. Plain and simple. ;-)

It is completely obvious that Johan Santana is by far the best pitcer in the MLB. I think that the second best pitcher is Roy Halladay. Think of last years statistics for example. Halladay went 16-5 with a 3.19 ERA. Santana went 19-11 with a 2.77 ERA. The next best pitcher in the AL was C.C. Sabathia who was 12-11 with a 3.22 ERA. The best pitcher in the NL was Roy Oswaltt who went 15-8 with a 2.98 ERA. Some pitchers who come close are Roy Oswaltt, Pedro Martinez (or at least before last year), Carlos Zambrano, Chris Carpenter, and Brandon Webb.

Roy Oswalt- if you rank pitchers on a scale of 1 to 100 with Santana getting a hundred, Oswalt is probably a 94 or 95, he is really good, and under the radar in Houston.

Roy Halladay, hands down.

Halladay can beat Santana with no problem. And has. Had Halladay be able to finish the '06 season, it would have been he and not Santana winning the Cy Young. In fact, had Halladay missed on a month in "05 because of that broken leg, instead of the rest of the season, he would have won it that year as well. That would have been 3 for Hallady and one for Santana.

To be quite honest, I'd rank Santana as the close second here, to Halladay.

I know that I am a little biased because i live in stl. But I have to think that in '07 the answer is Carpenter. But I do think that if Zambrano will be the next pitcher in a couple of seasons to challenge Johan as the best.

Right now it would be Roy Halladay, but I think that maybe in 2007 or 2008, either Carlos Zambrano or Felix Hernandez will challenge him. By the way, the three of them (Santana, Zambrano and Hernandez) are fron Venezuela. Like me.

Chien Ming Wang is obviously the second best pitcher currently in the MLB. His record last year was 19-6 and his ERA was less than 4. He was the runner-up for the American League Cy Young Award last year and had more than 450 ground balls last year.

i dont know bout santana being te best pitcher cause he had 19 wins just like wang of the yankees. Santana sure did have a better era but who cares they had the same amount of wins. So wang is up there.

If we're going by current stats then I'd say that Chris Carpender, Roy Oswalt, and Roy Halladay come in a distant 2nd.
If we're going by raw talent I'd like to say Felix Hernandez.
