Hi. If you're using your power in plug, connected to electricity, you won't be using your batteries at all. Also, it isn't adviseable to charge the batteries until they are completely depleted. If you charge them without having them totally discharged, they won't hold the charge as long. Hope this helps. My laptop is new too.

let the battery charge overnight and see what happens after that

You might have to buy another if it's dead.
If not, keep it charging.
