Your computer should have come with all the necessary software (discs) to download everything you need. Just put the CD into the CD slot, and you will be advised on what to do next. It's easy! If you bought a used computer, you need to contact the manufacturer, giving them the model number. They should have a backlog on the older computers, and it probably will cost very little, if anything. Hope this helps.

When you get a new computer you want to secure it before getting on the internet as well as adding more security after you connect.
Most new computer come with some kind of anti virus program. Get that turned on. You will update it later. Your computer also comes with the Windows Firewall. Get that turned on as well.
Now lets go ahead and connect to the internet.
You will have to set up your connection now. Just follow the prompts. Its pretty self explanatory.
Once you connect the very first site you should visit is
www.Micorosoft.com . Click on that link.
Once you get there look on the right side and click Security & Updates.
Now in the middle click on Microsoft Update.
When the next screen comes up click Custom. T
he next screen will tell you if you have any updates. Make sure you get them all. You may have to reboot a couple of times and then go back to make sure you get them all.
You now are much better secured. Now there are many more programs that need to be applied. Below is what I prefer to run.
Download, update and run Spybot---http://www.safer-networking.org/ . Don't forget to use the Immunize feature.
Download, update and run Adaware---http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/products/select_your_product.php
Download SpywareBlaster---http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html
SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed.
It's main features include:
- Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
- Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
- Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Those tips are programs to protect from spyware/adaware.
Now when you get more time head on over to http://www.tom-cat.com/security.html and apply all the tips you can.

Most computer come with windows pre-installed. All you have to do is follow the instructions to configure it, and you are on your way.
At least it was that way with my computer, that I bought last year.
