what is the origin of the puzzle ring?

im not sure of the exact country of origin, but the story behind it is a husband would give it to his wife as a wedding ring, and if she took it off it would fall apart and only he would be able to get it back together. this was supposed to keep her from cheating, cause if she took it off to go be with another guy, she wouldnt be able to get it back together, and the her husband would know.
