My musical theatre teacher just told us that the summer musical the ODC (Oneonta Dance Center, the place I go to) is going to be doing the play High School Musical. I really want to be Sharpay or Gabriella (mainly Sharpay) but the problem is I don't look like either of them. I look mostly like Kelsey but I DO NOT want to be her. (No singing, no dancing, nothing!) Is there anything I can do about this dilema? Also, if asked to sing a song for the audition, does anyone have any good ideas for both Gabriella and Sharpay from Broadway musicals?

Also, I'm a soprano if that helps you a little bit with about four or fives years of dance it ballet and musical theatre.

As a former teacher and professional director let me tell you that your LOOKS are virtually irrelevant to getting cast in a particular part. Your talent, and how you SELL the character is preeminent.

Which song you sing doesn't matter either. Audition with a song you like and feel comfortable singing....it will relax you and help communicate your sincerity and ability.

Hey! Sorry to disagree with superbird, but the song DOES matter. Looks usually matter too, but it really depends on the directors. I honestly don't think it should matter for High School Musical though.

If you're wanting Sharpay, definitely look for a song by a similar character. "Amayzing Mayzie" from Seussical comes to mind, but I'm not sure. Both are pop-influenced, and "Amayzing Mayzie" seems very similar to "Bop to the Top", so that's what I would suggest. I do agree, however, that you make sure that you're comfortable with whatever you're singing. If you can't sing "Amayzing Mayzie" comfortably, don't use it.

well, 1st of all, it doesnt matter that u dont look like them - it is actually better if u look different. that way, u can start off with a clean slate and not have expectations to live up to. I suggest that you sing a song that you REALLY like - if you dont like it, DONT DO IT! i personally like songs from Wicked. I like the songs No Good Deed, For Good (you would have to change the song a bit - its a duet), and I'm Not that Girl. Also, u could sing one of Gabriella or Sharpay's solos. I hope i helped! o, also, i would learn 2 really different songs. itll show ur diversity and flexibility

Hmm, for songs -

Phantom of the Opera
My Fair Lady (Really anything Julie Andrews)
Les Miserables
Don't Rain on My Parade from Funny Girl

Go on Limewire or iTunes and look up songs that you feel comfortable with.
