Atlantis is not lost. It has been found.

In the myth, Atlantis is an island civilization that traded with Egypt and fought with Greece. It was considered to be the most advanced civilization in the known world and its buildings were claimed to have hot and cold water piped indoors. Its capital city was located on a series of concentric ringed islands of red, black, and white rock, which sank beneath the waves in a natural disaster that destroyed the entire civilization. It is also claimed to have existed "beyond the Pillars of Hercules" thousands of years before Plato lived and relayed the story that we know today.

Ruins of the ancient city of Akrotiri on the island we now know as Santorini fit this description in virtually every way.

Akrotiri was part of the civilization we now know as the Minoans. They also had settlements on Crete and other islands in the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas. The Egyptians are known to have traded extensively with the Minoans and referred to them as the only other civilized nation in the world. Evidence of warfare between the Minoans and the Greeks of the mainland has also been found.

The ruins of Akrotiri contain multistory buildings built to resist earthquakes with both hot and cold water piped inside. This is at a time when the Greeks of the mainland were still living in one-room mud huts.

The island of Santorini, where Akrotiri is located, is a volcano covered in red, black, and white rock. It has a large, hilly, ring-shaped outer island and a smaller, flat inner island. The inner island of today is completely different than the one present at the time of the ancient settlement there. This is because the ancient inner island was destroyed in one of the largest volcanic eruptions in human history. This eruption not only blew the inner island apart and covered the outer island in tons of ash and pumice. The eruption also caused a huge tsunami that devasted all other Minoan settlements in the region. Ruins of other Minoan cities on Crete that were destroyed by the tsunami have been found.

There are only two parts of the story of Akrotiri and the Minoans that seem to differ from the legend of Atlantis. One is that people today think of the Rock of Gibraltar as the "Pillars of Hercules" and "beyond them" must refer to Atlantis being located in the Atlantic Ocean. The second difference is that the eruption that destroyed Akrotiri was not as far back in time as Plato claimed.

However, the ancient Greeks referred to many large mountain pairs as the "Pillars of Hercules" and had no settlements or trading partners anywhere near the Rock of Gibraltar. They didn't even know of they Atlantic Ocean. The Mediterranean Sea and the smaller seas connected to it were all they knew and they thought of it as an inner sea which was surrounded on all sides by land. It simply isn't possible that they were referring to Atlantis being located in the Atlantic Ocean, so the location of Akrotiri in the Mediterranean is entirely appropriate.

Also, the timing of Atlantis' destruction was relayed to Plato from a story of Solon hearing it from the Egyptains. In the Egyptian ruins, there is no record of an island civilization destroyed by nature at the time Plato claims. However, there are Egyptian tales of an island civilization destroyed at the time of Akrotiri. The Egyptians even claim to have tried to help rebuild their cities and evidence of this has been found at the destroyed cities in Crete.

Moreover, the Egyptians used two different periods of time to record the passing of the seasons. One is based on the cycles of the sun, like our year. The other is based on the cycles of the moon, like our month. By comparing these two time periods with the myth of Atlantis, you find that if Solon heard the Egyptian tale of Akrotiri and misheard 'month' as 'year,' then the timing of Akrotiri's destruction is instead placed at the time of Atlantis' legendary destruction.

Based on all this, I think it is pretty obvious that Akrotiri really is Atlantis.

"Since Donnelly's day, there have been dozens—perhaps hundreds—of locations proposed for Atlantis. Some are scholarly or archaeological works whilst others have been made by psychic or other pseudoscientific means. Many of the proposed sites share some of the characteristics of the Atlantis story (water, catastrophic end, relevant time period), but none has been proven conclusively to be the historical Atlantis. Most of the historically proposed locations are in or near the Mediterranean Sea, either islands such as Sardinia, Crete and Santorini, Cyprus, Malta, and Ponza or as land based cities or states such as Troy, Tartessos or Tantalus (in the province of Manisa), Turkey, and the new theory of Israel-Sinai or Canaan as possible locations."

i don't have self assurance in agency solutions yet after 50+ years I even ought to say i don't have self assurance in an Atlantis of pyramids and roads and potential crystals. Plato grow to be describing a civilization which began with morally stepped ahead persons. They were not so technologically stepped ahead they couldn't be beaten via present day Athenians, and in reality the tale grow to be advised to Solon because the monks were so grateful to Athens for what that victory meant to them. Ignatius Donnelly and Lewis Spence produced some exciting thoughts about the mum Civilization of Atlantis idea, yet they were precisely not convincing to me because they were so time-certain and airtight. Their concepts of what grow to be stepped ahead were not Plato's in any respect and neither were many of their different definitions. i have continuously had a difficult time concerning both and my issues have grown, on account that i have entered my dotage. The pilots sightings are too actual explainable: Ice is made from crystals and lines, probably forming shapes, and the "artifacts" can very actual be a proper away results of imperfections contained in the crystalline structure of the glaciers. If there is going to be data, it has to go back from elsewhere. i will say i have self assurance in Atlantis. Plato reported it grow to be authentic and who am I to argue with a Champion Olympic Wrestler? yet i don't have self assurance in this cutting-edge idea of it anymore.

Its a fairy tale brah...

Everyone looks at Plato's story for proof and description for location. However, they all tend to gloss over the end of the story... The legend as Plato told it said that the Atlantians were a race advanced in warfare and riches - but that they were defeated by the less advanced Atheinians in a war, and when they were defeated, the Gods then punished them by destroying their city...

All this is is another version of a story told most recently by George Lucas - Star Wars. the Evil empire was technologically advanced, but they are defeated by a ragtag group of little folks who have nothing but righteousness on their side...

Atlantis is a fairy tale.
