Listen to make sure the fan is running when you start it.

Laptops are sensitive to heat and won't run very long without over heating if the fan is no running.

You could have be having physical problems with your hard drive or the controller for it.

Hopefully Acer has good tech support or you are under warranty.

Call the tech support number and have them walk you through the reinstall. They may know a trick to run diagnostics on your system before it locks up.

Unfortunately though it sounds like maybe you're going to have to send it in for service if that doesn't work.

Good Luck and remember if they want too much to fix it, you may be better off buying a new one. Laptops have come down in price about 30% in the last year and gotten a lot faster. Repairs for a hard drive or controller can also cost a few hundred.

Hi, I have an acer laptop and just tried what they said and it works on mine. I pressed alt and F10 together. The acer recovery screen comes up and asks you for a password. Default password is 000000. All 0's are zeros. Hit enter then you get another screen come up. If you have backed your files up you can re-boot from there. If you choose second option yu get the choice to put your pc back like it was when it was new but you wil lose everything you have on it. How can you defrag if you lost xp. If you can defrag can't you do a system restore.

Did you run off a set of master cd's or dvd when you fist bought it.

I can only guess. Go to All programs - click start first - then - look for System recovery under those programs. It is probably like mine - has a partition with XP and all the stuff the computer came with compressed in a partition. Expect to lose all your settings for email, data, email addresses, music, video, etc. Unless you can back them up first. Also you will lose any programs installed - since the computer was new. If it gives you the option of a complete back up in future - to DVD use it!

I assume they already instructed you how to reboot in safe mode or to reboot using the restore CD (you made one, right?). If not, try those options. If that doesn't work, you'll probably have to call them back and get some more detailed advice.

Windows XP has repair capabilities. Shut off the computer and use your recovery disk. It should be able to repair the OS without losing any of your files.
