I think it is karma coming to collect on debts from everyones past. This would explain the inconsistencies in its behavior and who can get away from it and who can't. Not like a "purgatory" thing though. Just a portrayal of 'what goes around, comes around." Karma is given human-like qualities, kinda like Death in the Final Destination movies...not that they were the greatest..but I still kinda like the idea.

You know, I've been wondering that, myself. Possibly, some big clawed and toothed thingie, from the dark ages or a UFO? I have nary a clue. I can't wait, to find out, though!
