i am doing a paper on child abuse. and i can not understand why people do this?

Because they were raised as a catholic? I hear the priests say that it is OK and the church doesn't seem to take any action against them for it!

It is disgusting, but certain people feel that by molesting kids (who are weak and vulnerable) they are portraying their own strength. They enjoy the feeling that they can take advantage of another individual. Many molesters were abused themselves as children and were ripped of any control they possessed and now are trying to gain that control back through molesting kids themselves.

They have a mental disorder. Many of them were, themselves, abused as children--and the memory of that brings them to do it to others.
If they are simply thrown in jail, they will not get better. They need to be in a prison's hospital wing, and undergoing aggressive therapy for the duration of their prison term.
They are monsters, but they are sick monsters.
