I noticed the indicator to check the coolant on the dashboard of my Pontiac (Grand Am SE 1998) was on so I filled up on coolant. I know I filled up the correct coolant and a little past the fill line. However, it still comes on. Although not always. Is it indicating a different problem?

the sensor has got a piece of dirt in it, I had the same problem on my grand am and the mechanic said to take a rubber hammer and hit the overflow tank a couple of times and I looked at him like he was crazy and he said just do it and I did and the light went out, that has happened twice to mine.

Just guessing now. When the light comes on again, check your engine radiator with your engine running. If your radiator is low it will suck up the coolant (light comes on) then when you park it, depending on the timing if the thermostat is open or not, the excess coolant will flow back in your bottle. So when you start up, the light is off, and here we go again.

You should be checking for signs of any small leaks. Water pumps can go out fast or very, very slow. You could have a pin hole leak in the hose. Anyway, open the radiator cap with engine running and fill it up with water. You should be able to see it cycle too. Anyway, if a couple of days or weeks later you need to put water in it again. You got a leak somewhere. So start looking now instead of getting caught in the middle of the expressway with a busted hose or something.

Now if you have checked the water in the radiator and coolant and have no need to put water in a week then they coolant bottle sensor is bad somehow. Maybe a loose wire on the bottle. Check on this.

The coolant level sensors have a tendency to stick or you may have a bad one, located in the coolant recovery bottle with a two wire connector. Sometimes you can tape the bottle in the area of the sensor to get it to unstick...

When the car cools off take the radiator cap off to make sure it's full. Other than that I would think it's the cooling sensor.
