The box said the heater is preset to 78 but how long will it take to get there? This is still day 3 so I'm letting the aquarium sit but if it gets to 78 I think i might be able to add a fish or 2 tonight.

It varies of course, but generally speaking about a degree per hour would be expected. How cold the room is has a major impact of course. There is nothing magic about the number 78 though.... you could add fish just as easily at 75... less for many, many fish.

Don't add any fish yet. Sad so say it, but you will have to wait 4 weeks before it is safe to add fish. Actually, it is recommended to add a very small fish to get the nitrogen cycle going. This is one of the easiest traps for a new aquarist to fall into. When a fish produces ammonia (waste), the ammonia stays in the water until it is converted into nitrite and then nitrate. Both ammonia and nitrite are highly toxic in even very small quantities, so you will have to wait 4 weeks with a small fish in order to get bacteria to build up that will make the waste into not-so-harmful nitrate. Every so often, you will have to replace some water to remove nitrate.

Anyway, the heater will not take very long to get to the right temperature, but you shouldn't be turning it on until you get one small fish or some ammonia to start off the cycle.

how cares if you add the fish or not? if they croak, just put em on the grill and enjoy them with a nice chianti. guppies are best served with soy and watanabe, paired with a nice sake'.
