The Past shapes the future through the actions of people. It is not really any kind of entity or force that influences outcomes. Thus, it really comes down to being some kind of perception since it is dependent upon memory and whether or not it was accurately recorded.
However, the past is gone and hence non-existent. The future, by definition does not exist either. They are both illusions and concepts created by the mind. Only the ideas or concepts of the past and the future seem to exist, but only in the moment of consciousness. Once they are not in the consciousness, they are non-existent. Truly, the only existence is what is happening in this precise moment, and that is fleeting.
Upon further reflection, the past cannot shape the future since they are both nonexistent. There is only the illusion that they exist and one is affected by the other.

Simple.
You touch the stove. Your hand hurts. Even though it was moments ago the past has helped you prepare for the future by teaching you not to touch stoves.
You learn from your past mistake, most people do this. Most, not all.
Now if you are smart you learn about the mistakes other people have made in the past and you do not repeat them.
If you learn enough about the past you build a kind of pyramid that you stand on.
If you only learn from your own mistakes you never get off the ground.

Those who refuse to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. I don't know who said this first, but I have learned in my personal life, that if I don't learn from my past mistakes (& some mistakes from others), I usually end up making the same mistake again, at some point. We all can learn from others. For example, if I ever get married, I will spend alot more time than 7 months, to marry. If I don't I possibly end up in a marriage, miserable, like my parents.

People make decisions based on their experience and the experience of others (you would hope). If you jam your finger in a drawer this morning, you are going to think really carefully about your fingers and drawers in the future and do your best to ensure you don't jam it again. People often learn by trail and error. If they try something and it doesn't work, they try it differently the next time. It's said that guy who invented the lightbulb had tried a 1,000 different ways and people suggested he give up but he said, 'I know 1,000 ways that don't work', so he learnt from what didn't work and kept trying for a way that did work (Praise God).

The past leads us into the future. What people do today, like work, talk, sleep and how they do it affects what they will do the next day, how they will feel and who they will affect. Now relate that to history. Wars, Artists, people..everything that happens in a period of time marks out what will happen in the future. Of course people have control over this. Example. If you have a test tomorrow you can A)Study or B) Not study. The next day, you could rule out whether or not you make it into your dream college because of that grade which will/ could affect the whole outcome of your life.

Hopefully you like history. You need to study history that is relative to your area of interest. You'll find that we are creatures of habit, and constantly repeat the same mistakes. But, life and the world are "dynamic"-(always in motion)", so you need to craft your course of action. Rememeber a good army no mater how well they are armed, must be adataptable to it's enemy. Adapt, chart your course of action and maybe you won't let history repeat itself. You then have started to shape the future.
