Alaska Airlines have non-stops from MIA and ORD to SEA. And could connect from there to Anchorage.

Everyone finds an Alaskan cruise to be spectacular. Glaciers, eagles, whales, seals, sometimes bears. Little towns in Southeast Alaska along the way. You won't be in a bathing suit or getting a tan. But you can take a helicopter to a glacier, raft, fish or wander around town.

The boats themselves are like cruise ships anywhere - big and well-equipped.

The big question is do you want to do sea-only or land&sea. The land side usually includes Seward, Anchorage and Denali (which is impressive for its 20,320-foot mountain and for its wildlife -bears, caribou, mountain sheep, etc). All the cruise lines offer packages like that. Usually you cruise one way, before or after the land portion and fly the other way back to Seattle or Juneau for connections home.

On the land side, Denali is a must (if this is your going to be your only Alaska trip). Then I'd rank Seward then Homer then Anchorage. Seward and Homer are both gorgeous and the aquarium and day cruises in Seward very good. Homer has a lot of character (and characters), artists, chances to fish, and scenery all around. Anchorage have some good museums, lots of shopping, and connections to the whole state.

The cheap, do-it-yourself option is to come up on the State Ferry from Bellingham, WA. Get cabin or sleep in deck chairs in the "Solarium" (everyone does). About $300 one-way for 3 days. it is PB&J and chatting to independent travelers, not the seven-sqaure-meals-each-day cruise ship scence. But you go past the same towns, mountains, and fjords.
