I think their days are numbered unless they find a way to diversify.
The postal firms are really growing business with free trials etc. They're half the price with no late fees and a bigger selection of films.

On the other hand there's no ice cream or popcorn...

Yes.
Witness Blockbuster and their new plan that allows online subscribers to exchange movies in stores. All this seems to do (according to recent reviews) is lengthen the time it takes to get the next movie in your queue (since the stores don't have the movies many people want to watch anyway).
We will see Hollywood Video go before Blockbuster.

Unfortunatly so. i work at a small video shop which is mainly run as a Photo Shop as that part of the business makes more of the weekly income for the shop overall (AGFA Image Centre/Apollo Video in Addlestone, Surrey). We've tried some good deals lately to see if it will attract more people to come in. The deal i came up with in mid January was to pay upfront £30 for 10 rentals which go onto customers accounts as credits. Not only does it mean that the customers don't have to pay on their next rents but they also save upto £10 on rentals. So far, over 20 people have signed up for it in the last 2 weeks. My boss is pretty happy with the results.
I'm hoping that when all Blockbuster stores close in the summer (Yes, this is happening as they lose far too much money at their stores because of too many overheads & remember the "Blockbuster Promise". Well that too is partly responsable!) that our shop should hopefully gain more customers and provide them with much better service. I did used to work at Blockbuster for over 5 years so i know what i'm taking about when it comes to bad customer service as all the staff were bad at giving good customer service (with the exception of a few including myself).
We were always conned into selling customers "Bundle Deals" with their rentals which i was totally aganist as i feel that the customer shouldn't be pestered into buying things. However i used to sell over 90% of the stores overall "Bundle Deals" which for a part time student isn't bad and i was then told that their would be no reward for this achievement! (i.e.cash bonus, prize etc). Because of that, i decided never to sell customers "Bundle Deals". I think staff in any shop shouldn't be allowed to offer anything when serving a customer (i.e. "Can i interest you in buying ..........").

You have a point. DVD rental shop prices are getting ludicrously high, it's nearly the same price to rent a DVD as to go to the cinema and it's not even half the experience.

I've hooked up to Sky recently and haven't been to my video shop in months. The bloke that owns it is a nasty git and I couldn't be bothered traipsing all the way up to the top of the huge hill where the shop is when I can watch the same movie on satellite and avoid that bastard. It's more cost efficient too.

RIP Blockbuster, et all.

I've got to agree with everything that you have said and add to your list just how fed up everyone I know is by poor customer service.

I'm tired of being treated poorly whilst trying to hand over my hard earned cash. Internet shopping/renting saves us all from this.

Luckily the guy who serves in my local shop stocks popcorn, marshmallows and ice-cream but the woman at my video rental store is horrible... a smile and a "Thank you", might kill her.

High street rentals ARE a dying breed, cos you can download them for nothing, or next to nothing, & you don't have to worry about late fees or going back to the shop. True, there's no ice cream or popcorn, but if you get your mates round to watch it with you, you can ask THEM to bring it over!!!
