My sis recently qualified for the regional spelling bee. if she wins, she'll go to nationals. does anyone no how to study? i mean, do you really have to study the whole dictionary, and memorize the word of origins and all that stuff. any methods you no of? thanks! ;)

I've only watched the Scripps spelling bee once, but it did seem to me that those kids knew their word origins and especially rules about which letters were likely to appear in words of which origins. I'd say that your sister should try to contact former winners, if she can, and ask them what they thought was helpful. I was also impressed by how many of the words they had were of foreign origin, so it might be good for her to brush up on those words.

No, I don't think you have to "memorize the dictionary", but learning common spelling patterns and phonics rules would certainly help.

I'm not sure if it's exactly like "Akeelah and the Bee", but I think all the stuff they do on there to study makes sense.

MY daughters recent homework was a contest having to find the longest word with three letters in, it made her find words she never knew existed. e.g ech= echinodermatous. she enjoyed finding out the longest word in the English dictionary.
