I'm going to visit a sick friend today, he's been lying in bed with glandular fever - a swollen and sore throat, fatigue, very high fever - for the last week and he feels awful. He's used to a very active lifestyle so all the time stuck at home is killing him.

I thought I'd take over some things to cheer him up or keep him entertained, since I have work this week and can't spend too long keeping him company. I'm bringing him some videogames to pass the time, and some lozenges for his horribly sore throat, but I'd like to do something more.

What else can I bring him to cheer him up, or make him feel better? I can't really bring him food, since thanks to his swollen throat he can't eat much.

I had a good friend in hospital for a coupe of months last year with Crohn's disease (she is ok now though). Everyone had brought her the usual, books, mags, grapes etc. So i decided to get her some really random stuff just to mae her laugh. On the first day I gave her a garden gnome - complete with fishing rod. She was so perplexed we had a good laugh and she was in a good mood for the rest of the day.

On the second week it was clear she was going to be in hospital for a while so I went into my loft and found a lifesize cardboard cut out of scary spice (why i had it was a very long story). Over the the next few days and weeks this carboard cut out next to her bed was dressed up as something different. She was a doctor, a pirate, spacewoman etc.

However vomit soon destroys cardboard and something else was needed, so all of her school friends dibed in a bought a big hard back book, full on blank paper. We told her to write the first page of a story in it. Which she did, and everyday someone different wrote another page. Whoever was visting the sick girl thta day gave her the book to read. The story got quite long and rather silly insome points, it has covered all sorts of topics from a Maths teacher adding a science fiction twist on one page and on the next the teachers 4 year old son writing about a dog who could talk on the next. It's no Harry Potter, but it cheered my friend up. The book isn't finished yet, but everytime someone we know is ill, a few more chapters are written. Once the book is complete, my friend is going to write the final page and keep the book. (she has promised to type it out for us as well).

You could give him some of his favorite magazines to read or if he enjoys doing crossword puzzles, you could get him a book of puzzles. Since he's been running a high fever, how about some popsicles? That will help bring the fever down & soothe his throat. Hope your friend feels better soon.

Your presence is what matters the most in seeing your sick friend. Sneak him in some alphabet soup and a neck and backrub. You can also massage his feet.

Get some of the Burt's bees lotions and message his feet or back. It's a great treat to ease your friend from a terrible ordeal in a bed and get rid of a bad high fever.

Be sure to wash your hands when you get home, to avoid catching the virus. If it is non -threatening, don't even worry about it.

Wow, it's sounds like you really care about this friend of yours. If I were you I'd in courage you to get him moving around a little instead of him laying around all the time. Maybe it will it will strengthen his immune system a little I am thinking. Maybe I am wrong and sound like a complete fool but I am only trying to help you. I believe that this is the best thing for you to do to show how much you care. I hope it works.

I would take him some movies. Soup is always good when your sick, and find out who his favorite comedian is and get a movie or stand up show of him/her for him to watch. If you really want to splurge get him a portable back massage machine. Being stuck in bed stiffens up the joints and that will help to loosen him up a bit. Hope this helps and I hope he gets better soon!

You could bring him soup or ice cream if you want to do food. If he likes to read, you could take him a book. You could take him a movie that he hasn't seen. Best of all, you could just go spend some time with him....if he has been lying in bed he is probably lonely.

Popsicles....yum...they'll help his sore throat. Maybe rent a couple movies to take his mind off being so sick. Not sure what he's into, but my husband LOVES truck magazines...maybe a magazine about something he likes doing! There are some ideas for you..hope they help :)

Rent for him comedies.Or inspiring movies about gold medalist or things like that. This will lift his spirits! Also...if he is not that bad feeling during your visit...help wash his hair with a soft massage or give him a face shave...he will feel pampered and clean...I guarantee he will feel a lot better when you are gone.

Get a book of mind puzzles for him. Like crosswords and word searches or sudoku. It will help keep his mind active while he's held up in bed.

When my friend was sick I brought him a big book of puzzles and comic books.
