nail head, hit

"Socialism is a system of social organization in which property and the distribution of income are subject to social control rather than individual determination or market forces."

Pesonally, I work hard to care for my family's needs and believe others should do the same for theirs. I believe in charity but I don't want lawmakers putting my earnings into the hands of social sponges. There is a group of people who believe they are entitled to a equal share of wealth without putting forth equal effort.
The government's duty should not be to run business ventures but to maintain infrastructure and provide social services to those who are truly in need. I don't want "cradle to grave" care, I want the opportunity to succeed to the best of my ability with as little interference from the government as possible. The liberal agenda is counter to that.

Your assessment is correct.

The reason Liberals don't realize they are advocating Socialism is that they have no coherent political philosphy. They don't even understand the meaning of the terms that they use. They just hop from one disconnected idea to the other. It reminds me of the old Saturday Night Live show back in the 1970's when Dan Ackroyd would tell Jane Curtain, "Jane, you ignorant sl*t. Hopping, literally hopping from bed to bed until no decent man would have you".

That is how Liberals act. They just jump from one "feel good" idea to the next. First it's global warming, next it's an "anti-war" demonstration movement (which ironically, if successful, would guarantee we'd be on the bad side of a terrorist war against a very determined enemy).

Listen to every Democratic Presidential candidate. When asked what Kerry would do to reduce unemployment, he suggested creating some monstrously huge and complex department to help people find jobs. Can you believe what type of morass that would be? Even worse than the Department of Housing and Urban Development! (by the way, have you ever heard of this department actually making any progress over the years?)

Somehow, Liberals got the reputation of being "cool" while Conservatives are supposed to be old and stodgy. However, just to show how people, especially high school, college, and young adults are completely clueless, a Chicago radio DJ, Mancow, was a huge star. I would hear the 18-25 year old crowd talking about how smart he is, while in the next breath saying how stupid Conservatives are.

What they failed to realize is that Mancow was espousing Conservative views. However, since his delivery was more on the lines of a shock jock, the kids thought he was really cool, and agreed with him.

So, when you hear Liberals deny they are Socialists, they may not be lying. They simply do not understand what the term means.

Not too many because in America the political right has successfully demonized the meaning of socialism just as they have the meaning of liberalism.......Yet, they have no problem taking advantage of national infrastructure that is the result of socialistic reforms. The US is living proof that Capitalism and Socialism can coexist within a Democracy. Capitalism is great, it generates lots of the wealth, the problem is it also generates greed, waste and the hording of resources.

There is nothing wrong with socialism , if it means a better standard of living for the American population , why not. A lot of Americans confuse communism and socialism they are different. Under a socialist style government you still can vote , own a business , get universal health care , possibly be taken care of better after retirement , etc, etc.

Socialism refers to a broad array of doctrines or political movements that envisage a socio-economic system in which property and the distribution of wealth are subject to social control. This control may be either direct—exercised through popular collectives such as workers' councils—or indirect—exercised on behalf of the people by the state. As an economic system, socialism is often characterized by state or community ownership of the means of production.

The modern socialist movement had its origin largely in the working class movement of the late-19th century. In this period, the term "socialism" was first used in connection with European social critics who criticized capitalism and private property. For Karl Marx, who helped establish and define the modern socialist movement, socialism implied the abolition of money, markets, capital, and labor as a commodity.

A diverse array of doctrines and movements have been referred to as "socialist." Since the 19th century, socialists have not agreed on a common doctrine or program. The various adherents of socialist movements are split into differing and sometimes opposing branches, particularly between reformist socialists and communists.

Since the 19th century, socialists have differed in their vision of socialism as a system of economic organization. Some socialists have championed the complete nationalization of the means of production, while social democrats have proposed selective nationalization of key industries within the framework of mixed economies. Some Marxists, including many 20th-century Communists inspired by the Soviet model of economic development, have advocated the creation of centrally planned economies directed by a state that owns all the means of production. Others, including Communists in Yugoslavia and Hungary in the 1970s and 1980s, Chinese Communists since the reform era, and some Western economists, have proposed various forms of market socialism, attempting to reconcile the presumed advantages of cooperative or state ownership of the means of production with letting market forces, rather than central planners, make decisions about production and exchange. Anarcho-syndicalists and some elements of the U.S. New Left favor decentralized collective ownership in the form of cooperatives or workers' councils. Others may advocate different arrangements

We are already living in a socialist country. Antone who believes that we are still in the land of the free, hasn't been paying attention.

Wave to that camera on the street corner. Oh, and pay no attention to that observation plane overhead. Warrant, ... what's a warrant?

Left or right, the political spectrum is all just a smoke screen to keep your eyes wide shut.
