Exactly what my ex did!!!!! We were married for 14 years, the last 5 were miserable!! He turned verbally & a little physically abusive! Then he left me for another woman! I begged him back for 2 years, God knows why??!!!!! But I finally moved on & that is when he started wanting me back! He went so far as to come to my house & wait for me after a date (2yrs later!) & threaten the guy I was with!!! He would call & call & if I didn't answer he would show up pounding on the door!! I had to get a restraining order, which didn't seem to do squat! I don't get it, but apparently they have issues when you let go! It's like the expect to string you along forever! Just totally avoid & ignore him! Do not even read his texts, answer his phone calls, whatever! It may take a while, but eventually he will get the hint!
