We hear a lot from our comedians in the UK that the (North) Americans do not really get it when we are being sarcastic and take it seriously - Do you? Oh and before anyone says it - yeah, sarcasm is the lowest form of wit, etc.

Overall, Americans simply do not understand British Humor. By that, I mean the intended joke. I find it can be witty and funny, but unfortunately the most popular form of humor here is crude humor.

I am an American, and I love being one, but I truly do not believe that the majority of Americans understand the humor. I believe that some would take sarcasm seriously, but that the majority of people don't. Theres plenty of sarcasm over here in the states. Although when you see puzzled looks on some people's faces, you know that you need to tell THEM what sarcasm is. And they still wont get it.

I normally wouldn't answer a question like this, but I thought I should because I hear about people not understanding British humor quite often.

I'm English and I now live In Florida and have done for 2 years. The Americans however much they say they do, DO NOT get sarcasm. They think we're just being rude and their attempts are lame. Most of the people I work with have to be told it's sarcasm when I use it. you'll hear them say that they are the master of sarcasm but can ALWAYS be silenced with one quick comment.

They're to emotional to get real sarcasm.

Sarcasm is great when it becomes the person using it and they use it with wit and charm. If a person who is not very charming and/or has some amount of wit tries to use sarcasm for humor, it comes across as sounding stupid and can seem like a slap in the face. So, yes we get sarcasm when use correctly.

I think we just have different ideas of whats funny... Like Mr. Bean... so popular in th UK, but most Americans don't really find it funny... There are also different slang sayings that don't really make since here... and vice versa, but i have seen some pretty funny british sarcasm... the british version of the office ain't bad... but i prefer america's remake! Also Brits and Americans deliver sarcasm differently, they can say the exact same thing but the tone that they use can make it seem sarcastic and funny, or rude and mean!

British humour is in preserving with our developed centre of being in this area of the international, with all the rigors and tribulations GB has had over the years. at the same time as the States grow to be formed all those histories were forgotten and new ones were made, hence the guidelines of humour replaced. i ought to consequently finish that British humour is 'unique' and looks crude (Rowan Atkinson, James Bond humour, Lee Evans, Al Murray etc). yet American humour is better sophisticated and depending, yet can look dull to the unintelligent, humorous courses that attempt this: (Fraiser, Becker, Cheers, 2 and a 0.5 adult adult males). then you absolutely get flow overs between Yank's and Limey's, aka friends, Scrubs, My call is Earl etc).

sarcasm in the form of comedy is great. The few tight azz americans that cant take it arent worth talking about.....yes this country has alot of thin-skinned people in it that find certain comedy to be degrading or racist or too dirty. These people suck and shouldnt attend"what they call" lowbrow comedy forums. I cant stand people like that, but to each their own.

I once accused the Americans on here of being "a bunch of colonial terrorists who should have been strapped to the muzzle of a cannon and had some sense blown in to them"

I got reported for "Insulting other participants", so I think they don't get it, and do take it seriously.

I don't take it seriously. When I am talking to them, I just ask them if they are being cheeky. I generally enjoy British humour (with a u).
