My wife is in the military and we just found out we are moving to Vandenburg AFB, California. The military will pay for our stuff to be shipped down there but we aren't sure whether we should fly or drive. I know there are perks for both but I would like some of your suggestions and why...

It depends on where you are coming from. The closest airports are Santa Barbara (about 45 minutes drive away and more connecting flights) and Santa Maria (about 25 minutes drive away and not so many flights). If you won't have a car, there are shuttles that can reserve that can take you to Lompoc from both airports. If you fly into L.A., you've got about a 2+ hour drive depending on time of day. Santa Barbara Airbus is your only choice without renting a car from L.A. More info on Santa Barbara Airport below - flights and ground transportation.

You forgot one important fact. Where are you coming from? If you can afford to fly, I would. Ok. Seattle. The drive down the coast is awesome. You can check out so many awesome places on the way. The giant Redwoods are so beautiful and breath taking as well as a little place called Solvang near San Francisco, not to mention all the neat places in and around San Francisco as well as the Hearst Castle in San Simeon and the vinyards of the Napa Valley (don't test too much wine...lol). Then you can get the lay of the land and have fun doing it.

you didn't say where you are going from, or the rest of your family details, kids ? pets?

just remember if you fly, you will still have to pay for your vehicle to get there (around $400), plus once you are there you will have to rent a vehicle until yours gets there

its only a three day drive and your expenses like gas, food, and hotel, will get reimbursed, if you have the time and don't have more than two kids, i would drive down and make it into a family vacation spread over 5 days, there lots to see and do along the way, if the kids are old enough let them help plan
