Depends on the school set up. Most school systems have elementary as K-5, middle school as 6-8, and high school 9-12.

In this case 6th is a good time. Most middle schools pool kids from several elementary schools. There are a lot of new people meeting new people.

My daughter changed in 7th grade. It took her a couple of months, but making a few friends makes the transition much easier. All of this happened 10 years ago. After a year she was glad we moved here. Kids were much nicer. After two years she was thanking us for getting her away from the kids she was friends with at the old school. (They'd changed for the worse) Now she is married to a guy she met in 10th grade and very happy.
