I'd strongly suggest you check out Vassar. It's in Poughkeepsie, NY, which is not exactly a small town, but it has a superb Drama department. Alumnae include Meryl Streep and Lisa Kudrow.

If the small town setting is paramount for you, then check out Smith, Mount Holyoke, Bard, and Ithaca College. (Smith has the best theatre dept. of these).

Sewanee is a highly regarded liberal arts university with a great theater program. Tennessee Williams (Streetcar Named Desire) left his copyrights to the University, so our performing arts center is named in his honor. It's a small university, situated on top of a mountain with 10,000 acres for you to enjoy. It has a lot of quirky traditions, and it's just a great community for you to spend four years of your life.

Contact the admissions office. I'm sure they'd put you in touch with a faculty member and students to talk to. I highly encourage a visit as well.

Any college is a good "Liberal Arts" college. That's your basic "run of the mill" degree.

If you're looking for one focused on theatre, I know that Columbia University Chicago has a great theatre program. But that's not really small town....but who doesn't love Chicago?!?

Try Smith College or Hampshire College (Hampshire is full of artsy people and doesn't give grades, just written evalutations). They are both out in western Mass. Or maybe Skidmore College, Swarthmore, or Ithaca.
