Democrats favor the government as the answer to everything because it is their "world view". In general they do not trust people to work out their problems on their own. They also believe that the deeper and more behavorial problems in people can be treated manually and externally. Libertarians and Republicans, on the other hand, recognize the distinction between that which can be modified and that which is in our nature. In short, Democrats trust people to rule people, while Libertarians and Republicans trust people to rule *themselves*.
Norteamericano H needs to answer the question instead of sidestepping it and using the opportunity to advance his/her own agenda. Such a tactic is typical of that of a politician trying to throw up a "straw man" argument.

It is largely due to the idea that the Democrats are the party of the poor. They care about the poor. They care so much that the appoint all of these government agencies staffed by so many of their constituents to look after the poor. The make the poor dependent upon these institutions and they remain poor.
Oh what a terrible thing to say, the Democrats are trying to keep the poor poor. Sad but true, because the Republicans are the party of the rich and if these people become rich they will vote republican.
When someone starts to tell you what a wonderful Christian they are, grab your wallet and listen all you want.
When someone starts to tell you how much they care about the plight of the unfortunate, grab your wallet and listen all you want.
Sooner or later either person is going to ask for whats inside your wallet.

For the same reason the Republicans believe in government as the answer to all ills - that's how you stay in power. Promise the moon; it does not matter if you deliver. The intent is everything.
The American voter will believe the promises made by the politicians. Like a victim of abuse, they keep going back for more. "It will be different this time," the politician exclaims! But it never is.

You mean, like trying to keep those gays from being allowed to marry? Like trying to keep sex education and evolution out of our schools?
And yet when we question the government, we're accused of being traitors. The logic... it doesn't compute.
In any case, "tax and spend" makes more sense than just "spend and spend."
