Mardi Gras means "fat Tuesday" and is celebrated on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday which is the start of Lent - a period of abstinence and fasting. In much of Europe it is called "Carnival". It is the traditional celebration of excess and lust that takes place on the last day before Lent starts.
