Mom & Pop Stores are usually in reference to small businesses that are ran and operated by a family or a company in which most of the employees are related or personal with one another in some form or fashion.

A small store, not a corporation, and not a chain, that is family owned and operated: opened by someone's mom & pop, ran by someone's mom & pop. The ultimate goal is usually to pass it to the next generation.

Mom and Pop stores are normally what they refer to for stores that are smaller in size and may or may not have been started as a family business. We've got so many "big box" stores now...Walmart, Target, Home Depot, etc....that is the antithesis of a "Mom and Pop" store.

A "mom and pop" store is a small store, owned by a family. It implies that the business is run by a married couple, who are named, respectively, "Mom" and "Pop". This term has a positive connotation about customer service and entrepreneurism.

It means a small shop owned and operated by "Mom and Pop"--that is, a family business, not a big corporation or a chain store outlet.

Well I am Australian but my job is to deal with businesses of all sizes and here we commonly use the term "Mums and Dads" business to refer to any Husband wife operated business. These businesses are usually quite small and run under a partnership structure rather than a company (corporate) structure but some do operate through trusts. Many of these businesses are trades people with some employing contractors to assist with big jobs or alternatively they are as others have said .. your various corner shop / take away/ milkbar/ privately owned hardware etc- type of business. I am of course only guessing but I imagine that its a similar situation in America.
