Valentines to me, is some man made holiday (of course) where the whole main emphasis is based on love. I think in a way it does kind of leave out the single people. I mean basically you have to be coupled with someone as you see on television commercials, computer advertisments, and whatever other marketing displays. I really don't feel however that Valentimes day is important, technically its just another day for the consumer or average american to spend, spend, and once again spend. Its one day where the resturaunts, stores, gift shops, and flower shops, get to flourish off of "love struck" spenders. So once again, I say Valentines day means absolutely nothing...its just like any other day of the year, it goes by so fast. I mean the other holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter Sunday, Fourth of July, etc., seem to have one thing in common, celebration for all! I mean families, relatives, and friends can come together and celebrate eachother as well as whatever that holiday is representing. Thats why I think I care about those sorts of occasions much more than Valentines Day. My parents really didn't care to much about Valentines day and they are a couple, I see them exchange a hug and kiss, then my dad gets me a pretty boquet of flowers and my mom a beautiful bunch of roses. Then thats it, I mean there is no big deal! Its like any other day to me, I really don't look foward to it because of that reason, its just like any other day! My friends(who are dating and stuff) say to me that they hate valentines day, they feel the same way, that valentines day is no big deal! Besides that shouldn't we display love every day? Not just because "oh its February the 14th and I need to get Molly some chocolates and flowers and tell her she looks pretty and I love her." You should tell her she is pretty and that you love her every day of the week. But thats just my opinion though of Valentimes day.

Actually it is based on a Person called St. Valentine...I copied the following from the American Greetings website for you...
One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men -- his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.
Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.
According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl -- who may have been his jailor's daughter -- who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. It's no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France.

A long time ago, before saint Valentine was a saint, Valentine was going to be executed for marrying a roman soldier to a catholic woman. As he was evading the soldiers after him, he knoced over a bottle of red ink ont a parchment sellers' pile of parchment. He had the idea to cut the red parchment into hearts and give them to all his friends so they would remeber his and God's love for them. That is why we have Valentine's Day.

A fabricated holiday intended to make florists, jewelers, card manufacturers and restaurants money. This holiday is also intended to make people in love submit to consumerism. There is not much that is "lovely" about Valentine's day and it's sad that people cannot make a point of celebrating affection at other times during the year.

Its to mock single people and if you are not single its for you to buy your bf or gf something (I think its a governmet arranged holiday to "cooperate" with the economy). They want people to spend money but not people have become cheap lol. This guy from college is giving his gf a "hug or maybe a kiss" thats what he said LOL.
Anyways....We should get the day OFF just like other holidays!
:D
