I have a revolutionary online business idea. I have no idea how to design my site and publish it. I am assuming I will need a web designer. But can I trust them with my new business idea? How do I know they won't just run with my idea and start a web site for themseleves? Please help!

You pick someone large enough to sue for large amounts of money and you make him sign a non-disclosure / noncompete agreement.

UPDATE:

Another answerer said to copyright or patent your idea. You can't copyright an idea, period. You can patent an invention but it has to be something tangible, meaning it has to actually exist, or at least have complete and accurate plans for construction, in order to obtain a patent.

Anything that you think of and put in Digital Print or Print is your copyrighted work. See Digital Millennium Act. But it is very wise to get an attorneys advice in any legal matters especially where contractual agreements are in play.

That is a part of about a 4 page read.
Do the poor mans copyright also, just as a backup, write the full idea down address it to your Home Address. Place it in a Manila Envelope, use the Nylon Packing tape to seal it with all your original idea in it, then send it by Registered Mail from the Post Office, when it is delivered, you will have to sign for it, keep all receipts from the post office, do not open the letter, you know what is in it, if it goes to court, ask your attorney when it should be presented to the Judge.
That is best protection in writing that you will ever have and the US Postal Service is your witness.

Becareful, here in the UK the person who creates you website has full rights over it unless you have something written into you contract specifically for this purpose.

If you are worried confidentiality then you need a confidentiality agreement signed beforehand.

My best advice is to see a lawyer but the situation maybe different in your country.

Hope this helps.

I don't know *all* web designers. They are humans and shouldn't be typecast by profession. I am a web designer. I can be trusted. I suspect it is possible there are those who cannot be. It takes all kinds to make a complete set of human beans.

I think you are looking for a non-disclosure agreement.

There are also several sites online where you can download a pre-written NDA you can customize and sign.
