If the only times you actually see it, it's a fog/ghost/etc type form? A fog or spirit is unable able to do anything like that, no matter what their powers are otherwise. The pilot, Shannon, et al looked very clearly like they had gotten tangled up with a rabid animal.

In season 1, when Boone was left in the forest by Locke, he found Shannon ripped apart by the monster. Even though we found out later it was just hallucinations.

Yeah,they are going to have to be pretty crafty to make us believe that smoke-fog rips people to shreds. There has to be some sort of power in the fog-mist that can manifest itself to be able to exert actual physical force.........I will be waiting patiently..I hope that i,m not disappointed in the explanation.

Anyway, It is a manifestation of the fear, guilt, evil, and other wise bad feelings - it can do anything it wants as its power is telepathic and telekinetic.
