I've also noticed that some folks, blacks in particular, seem to think that Italians "aren't really white" either. Seriously, what's up with that?

Hispanic is not a race. It is an ethnic designation, based on language and culture. 97% of Argentinians are unmixed white as are 88% of Uruguayans. 86% of Cuban-Americans are white. Spain, of course, is virtually all white except for fairly recent nonwhite immigrants.

The Spanish, Portuguese, Italians & Greeks are all part of the Mediterranean subcategory of the Caucasoid race.

Skin color has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with race. The term "white" is not meant to be taken so literally. It is merely a synonym for Caucasian.

What's with the knee-jerk reactions & attitudes? BTW, I'm primarily of Irish descent with some French & English.

A white (or Caucasian) person is defined as one who has origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, North Africa, the Middle East & southwest Asia.

Randyboy is right! Science officially recognizes ONLY 3 races:Mongoloid, Causacoid, & ******* (look it up).
In the Caucasoid race there are many ethnic groups-Spanish,Portuguese, Italian,French,Dutch,German,Irish,Romanian... ... ...and they are what we classify as 'white'.

There are many no-nothing, subversives who try to brainwash others into believing false info about this topic. They're looking 4 an "edge".

Ciao from an UNMIXED, 100% Italian (Caucasian)guy in NYC.

It depends on which Hispanics you're talking about. If you mean Hispanic from Spain or Portugal, then yes they're considered white. But not so with South American Hispanics. Sure they can look caucasian, but technically and socially, they really aren't and there isn't a thing wrong with that. They can be part white having one caucasian parent, but there is an unwritten rule in the US that states that that doesn't make you white.

It originates back to the one drop law (which actually was at one time a law) back in the days of slavery. Basically the law stated that if you had one drop of black blood in you, you were black. In the end this made things very confusing for racists as races began to intermarry and have children who looked more white than black.

I'm not going to pretend to know the context you're talking about but I've heard the term White Hispanic used a few times and in all those cases, it was being used to associate more with the White race for purposes of acceptance and to put themselves higher above other, darker members of their race and not so much to indicate actual hertiage or ethnic background.

Many Africans and African Americans are guilty of this as well...since slavery, fairer skinned black people (mulattos and quadroons) have been held in higher regard (though not much higher) by white and black people alike. If you saw Spike Lee's movie School Daze, you know what I'm talking about. It's wrong, but that's the way it is.

In the case of Africa, women in various countries are using dangerous cosmetic products that claim to lighten their skin. Many of these products contain lye or other caustic ingredients and they have caused so many serious injuries that many of the countries launched campaigns to promote the beauty of dark skin.

who cares? Is it a big deal to be white or something? As for Italians, you need just speak to a Northern Italian and see how and what they think of Southern Italians- which happen to be dark and VERY close to the North coast of Africa. Now, the rest is Bullsshittio.

Murr I get tired of the whole "black or white" issue. Hispanics are Hispanics some are darker than others. "Black" people should be called African-Americans and White people Caucasian.

They can't be whit because they're Hispanic! Just like Whites can't be Hispanic because they're White. Hispanis deals with the language Spainish and the many forms of it. White's are European and are native to the English culture.

Whoa whoa whoa.
Honey, chill.
When I think European white, I think WHITE. Like blonde hair, blue eyes, really REALLY pale skin. Italians I see as Mediterranean.

But be white if you want. I really, really don't care.
