Steve Yzerman. Captain for 20+ years, lead the "Dead Things" back to respectability, won three Stanley Cups, and stayed with the Wings for his career (still with them as a VP).

It's Steve Yzerman. His presence in the locker room was without question. There was no better leader on that team than "The Captain." The Wings were a different team without him during the season when he missed so many games coming off knee surgery. His willingness to play through pain was none more evident than the year that the beat Carolina to win their third Cup in six years.
He also changed his game when Bowman took over the team. Bowman had him take a more defensive approach to the game and he went from being mainly a goal-scorer to an all-around player. Not once did he complain about his offensive numbers dropping and he led that team by example.
The thing that will set him apart from others is that he was the longest serving captain in NHL history. It was like 22-23 years when all was said and done and with, and with the league changing, that could be a record that will last for quite some time.

As a Leafs fan, I would have to say George "Chief" Armstrong, who played professionally from 1949 until 1971 (including the 1950-51 and 1951-52 seasons in the AHL). He played for the Toronto Maple Leafs for twenty-one seasons and served as the team's captain for eleven of them, the longest such tenure in Leafs' history. While Armstrong was never regarded a star nor ever named to the All-Star team, his steady leadership contributed to the longest string of success the Leafs have seen as of 2007. Armstrong scored an empty net goal in game six of the 1967 Stanley Cup playoffs to clinch the Cup victory over the Montreal Canadians. The Leafs have not won the Cup since.
My next choice would be Mark Messier....who captained the Edmonton Oilers when they won the Stanley Cup - even after Gretzky and other top players left the Oilers.

Many think Mark Messier was with the Rangers. Some say Steve Yzerman was with all those cup wins Detroit had. In my opinion Jean Beliveau is the best because he was a great role model and he was the captain of one of the most succesful hockey teams in NHL history.

Steve Yzerman , Messier. Obvious choices. But Jean Béliveau won 10 cups, captained 5 of them, he won the first Conn Smythe Trophy! My vote is for Béliveau.

The greatest captain of all time is the Great Ray Bourque. This man was one of the smartest player Ive ever seen lace them up. I wish my Bruins had a guy like that around these days. Chara does a good job but he isnt as knowledgable as Bourque was.

wow u guys don't know that much about what it means to be the captain. Its Steve Yzerman for sure. Because he was willing to sacrificed his body for his team. And besides the fact that he turn the Detroit red wings from the dead wings to what they are today. He helped bring hockey back to hockey-town. Who cares that the great one has all the record it comes down to what he did to help his team win. And from what I've seen the great one has never sacrificed his body for his team

Well, I'd have to go with Wayne Gretzky. I mean, you look at the stats, the influence he's had with teams. Edmonton was nothing in the WHA until Gretz got there and now they are in the NHL...Kings were not a high caliber team until Gretzky took on the reigns and got them to the Cup Finals. He has brought hockey to places in the WORLD that would have never even thought about it before. Gotta go with the Great One

Messier was the greatest motivator and leader but maybe not the best player who wore the "C". The other guys mentioned were outstanding players but not as strong a leader.
