It varies person to person. Lochia, the discharge of blood after child birth, for me lasted almost 6 weeks (I also breastfed and my next period was 32 days later and one every month since then-- I'm still breastfeeding 8 months later and having a period every month.) A friend of mine said that after her first she had lochia for 16 days, w/ the second it lasted for 3 weeks and w/ the 3rd it was over 5 weeks. It really does vary woman to woman, but plan for atleast 2 weeks. I also had a c-section and some women say that lochia after a natural birth ends sooner.
Edit: As Jen D says, not everyone's period gets better-- as a matter of fact, mine didn't and my friend that I stated above, her's didn't either-- I never suffered from cramps and I do now... They are also heavier.... My mom on the other hand said hers were better after each childbirth, but she got PMS headaches. Just know that no 2 women are gonna be the same.

It isn't actually a period after you deliver. But I did bleed for about 4 weeks give or take a day or two. And remember before you go home you need to get some form of birth control because just breastfeeding isn't a form of birth control. Just some friendly advice. Know one had given me that advice and I have my kids now and they are 11 months apart. That was quick. So since your planning ahead plan on some birth control too.
Good luck and congrats on your baby!

It varies from person to person and from pregnancy to pregnancy. I believe the average is about 2-3 weeks postpartum.... some may be much shorter and some can last up to 6-8 weeks... Anything longer than that should be evaluated by your physician.
I just wanted to add... I bf'd all 3 of my children and I had a tubal with my 3rd. My periods lasted up to 8 weeks and were very heavy... so it's not always the case that bfing will lighten it up... just thought I would mention that... everyone is different....

It can last up to 6 weeks after birth. If you are breadtfeeding it can be as little as 2 weeks and not that heavy. The first couple days after delivery is heavy. If you have a c-section then your period is lighter also and does not last very long either. Breastfeeding is the key to a much shorter and lighter flow after giving birth.

With both my kids it lasted about 2-3 weeks, it's not your period it's the after bleeding. And I never got my period until about 3-4 months after that either.

It's not actually a period. But it varies from pregnancy to pregnancy. With my first I bled for 21 days and 9 days with my second.
Now as far as getting my period back, it came back at 6 months with my first because I was breastfeeding and maybe around 4 or 5 months with my second(?)...can't remember.

There is no predetermined length. Each woman is built and has different cycles each month. I am 4 days long, 2 days heavy and 2 days panty liner. My BFF is 7 full days heavy.
I remember with my DD- 1st child - I had after birth discharge for 3 wks with my DS - 2nd child- I only had discharge for 1.5 wks.
I am sorry we cannot truly answer this question for you, but just know you will have it for at least a week after delivery.
Hope this does help at least a little bit.

It's not actually a period. It's called lochia and is just the after bleeding. It will be heavy at first then it will lighten up but you'll still spot for about 3 weeks or so.
