Tom Dempsey set the record for longest FG 63 yards in 1970.Remember Dempsey was a straight away kicker. The only straight away kicker to make a FG from more than 60 yards.Every other kicker to make a FG over 60 yards have been soccer style kickers.Which makes it even more amazing.

He's STILL tied for the record distance. Dempsey's kick was from his own 37 yard line because the goal posts were still on the goalline then. The posts were moved to the end line in 1974, and it allowed Elam's record-tying attempt to come from his own 47 and still qualify, since the covered distance was 63 yards, regardless of goalpost placement.

kinda in the sense that he has that record. He's not in the Hall of Fame (only true-kicker (ie: non multi-position player) is Jan Stenerud

and actually it's no different where the goal-posts where, it just means he was back-farther, the distance is still the same (ie: straight 63 to the goal, or 53+10yds of endzone)

I would say his foot condition was an advantage in that situation. In all honesty, I would expect his/Elam's record to be broken in the next 5 years as the kickers are getting stronger and stronger. Matt Bryant (Bucs) kicked a 62 yarder this year to beat the Eagles, and Rob Bironas (Titans) had a 60 yarder.

I would say that he's legendary by the fact that he turned his disability into a very successful NFL career.

Tied for longest FG now. You don't need a hand to kick, and his half-foot probably helped him because it created a flat striking surface instead of toes or a pointed shoe.

No kicker is a legend.

I agree, back then the goal post were on the goal line so he kicked the 63 yard field from his own 37 yard line!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! like to see that today.

Couldn't agree with your thoughts more. To overcome the disability's one thing, but to kick like that was absolutely amazing!
