Its not. Goldfish grow very large and produce a lot of waste.
By allowing it to live in such a small space your basically allowing it to swim in its own urine. Aquariums usually contain bacteria that breakdown Ammonia into less harmful compounds(that are taken out by a water change). By keeping that fish in such a small container, you will not grow the needed bacteria and ammonia will build up and poison your fish. Ammonia poisoning is a horrible way to go.
Goldfish have the potential to grow very large and by confining it like that you will stunt and disfigure it.
Please do the responsible thing and set up a proper aquarium or take it to a pet store.

Okay ... don't get him a bowl, get the fish an aquarium. Bowls are not really ideal for any sort of fish, no matter what some people say. Goldfish especially need a lot of room (they are quite messy, actually). It is actually recommended that you should have ten gallons of water for each goldfish in a tank.
You can go to Wal-mart and buy and inexpensive 10 gallon setup that has everything you need to make your fish happy. If you really want to be nice, get a bigger tank and get the fish a friend. Also, please remember when changing water to use a water conditioner, which you can buy at the pet store (and it most likely comes in an aquarium kit as well).
A lot of people think goldfish and bettas can live just fine in little bowls, but really, think about it ... the size of that fish to the size of the bowl ... that would be like putting a human in a closet and expecting them to live there.
Fish also need aeration ... and one other important thing that is important is the surface area of the water. If you do get a fish bowl, only fill it like half way. That way there is more surface area on the water and the fish will have more oxygen. However, I would still recommend spending a little extra money and getting and aquarium.

Well, a sprite bottle isn't good for your friend's little sister's fish, but changing the sprite to water, great idea!!! But, you should get a nice bowl for the fish because you would probably need a filter to keep the fish alive and well enough to eat good!!!!

A Betta fish calls for no less than 5 gallons to live completely chuffed and healthy, bowls is mostly why they get depressed, get water marvel, freeze, and die early, so i might want to extremely recommend in the route of them, no matter if enormous chain doggy retail shops attempt to promote them via saying Bettas can live in small parts of water, that is conveniently no longer actual. They also must have a heater, the water calls for to be between seventy 8 and 86 ranges, 70 ranges is too chilly for them and so that they wont move a lot. and may finally end up unhappy and undesirable. They pick a sparkling out like all fish, and it would want to should be a low drift sparkling out seeing that they are susceptible swimmers and prefer although water. Plastic flowers can rip their fins, i'd ideal recommend live or silk flowers. yet they pick them to cover and leisure. you may ought to under no circumstances do a one hundred% water enormous difference. you may ought to Google the right thanks to cycle the water earlier than having the fish, and then ideal do 20% water alterations about once per week. in common words feed them about 3 pellets an afternoon. Over feeding is plenty worse than below feeding touching on to fish, plus you also do no longer favor to pollute the water. they're completely carnivorous so that you ideal food made somewhat for Bettas, as different fish food may extremely frequently be plant dependent. They also love blood worms and mosquito larvae, although once extra, do no longer over feed. sturdy fulfillment!

your friend really should get a fish bowl for it. The CO2 could kill the fish, and a plastic fish bowl might only cost a few dollars.
