Fungi spores are naturally present in water. The fungi, like their land relations, are actually plants that grow and thrive on dead organic matter. Thus only damaged fish are susceptible and healthy fish will resist infection. Usually a graze or wound will attract fungus however sometimes a wound is due to infection by another parasite such as worms or flukes. In this instance both the fungus and the primary cause of infection must be treated. If left to develop, fungus will kill the fish.

After ascertaining the initial cause of the fungus and remedying that, use a solution of phenoxethol at 1% in distilled water. Add 10 ml of this solution per liter of aquarium water. Repeat after a few days if needed, but only once more as three treatments could be dangerous to aquarium inhabitants. If the symptoms are severe the fish can be removed from the aquarium and swabbed with a cloth that has been treated with small amounts of povidone iodine or mercurochrome.

If you are really sure it's a fungus you will need more than just salt to cure them. Go to a good aquarium shop and look for a fungus medication. Get help from any older guy with a beard (lol) or the owner of the shop and be sure to include the fact that you are treating Discus.
