Holding your breath lets you be able to hold your breath for longer periods of time.

No, by holding your breath for periods of time while doing exercise i.g. swimming it will decrease the amount of Oxygen your body needs to function. It does not strengthen your lungs in anyway because they will only grow with age. The endurance party will increase because your body needs less oxygen so your heart rate will decrease and your muscles will tire less quickly.

improve your bronchical tubes

possibly, with practice , do you mean underwater, if you do don't practice alone,

need someone to haul you to the surface , when you can't
