My computer won't allow me to log onto or into anything. I can't check email, myspace, or anything. I get pop ups, but if I close them out then the whole internet shuts down, so I have to minimise them. About a month ago, my freind's mom put a virus on our computer and supposedly rebooted the whole computer and "erased" the virus. I'm confussed and fustrated. What can I do?

Don't you just love all of the answers that tell you to go to a site and download progams, when you clearly state you cannot do it.

Do you have an Antivirus program installed on your computer? If so, turn off the computer. When you press the power button start tapping the F8 key at least once a second until the Recovery Screen appears. When it offers you a choice, selete SAFE MODE. This screen will be ugly, but don't worry. Double click on the AV programs Desktop Icon and run the AV program. Delete all it finds. When it is finished, turn off the computer and it will restart in the normal mode automatically.

Rebooting a computer will not remove a virus since Rebooting is nothing more than restarting.

Reformatting is what will remove the Malware from the computer. This happens because Reformatting takes the computer back to the day you bought it. All data and programs on it, that did not come preinstalled, will be lost.

If your computer came with a set of disks you can Reformat by installing the XP disk, turn off the computer, restart. Most computer require you to rapidly and repeatedly tap the ESC key immediatly after pushing the power button on the computer. This will start the process of Reformatting your computer.

Many computer now come with all the programs preinstalled and do not have a set of disks. These computers have a program that allows you to make one set of Recover Disks. If you did not make a set of recovery disks, you cannot do a Reformat until you aquire a set. You can aquire a set by calling the Computer Manufacturer and buying it. They are usually very cheap (mine charges $10 + S&H).

You can purchase a good AntiVirus program at stores like Wal-Mart, Office supply, computer stores, book stores etc. You can then install the disk and run the antivirus program from startup and, HOPEFULLY, remove the infection. This does not always work.

You can use another computer (friends), download and save to the C Drive, a free antivirus program like AVG 7.5. Copy the program from the C Drive to a CD/DVD and then put it in your computer and run it from startup as described above.

If you can't do any of the above, you will have to take it to a repair shop.

Boot into Safe Mode with Networking.

Restart. As soon as the computer starts to load repeatedly press F8. I think you have to hit enter again. Now use your arrow keys and choose Safe Mode with Networking. That will only allow programs to start that are needed for windows.

Now run a free online scan at the link below. It will also remove the virus.

Get some antivirus software, update it and its virus definitions and run it. Other than that, there's little you can do to get rid of a virus besides reformatting Windows. You can't get rid of a virus by rebooting.
