Being shocked is not the problem. http://wcco.com/topstories/local_story_318195124.html and watch the video.

Touching the car will dissipate any static. Please don't get back in, no matter how cold it is.

It has nothing to do with you being shocked.. it has to do with not being exloded due to a static discharge when filling the tank
(My Toyota is notorious about static discharge.. other vehicles i've had not a problem at all.. but this one.. you can bet on it..)

Static can build up on you seimply from the car seats or by the rubber tires rolling on the pavement.. its called electrostatic discharge when you flash to the gas nozzle.. the physics ad premise have been around for centuries.. its why a laden jar or a tesla coil works basically...

Addendum: touching the gas cap dosent really do anything most gas caps are plastic.. INSULATORS.. wont do a damn thing... even the few ons that are metal have a rubber or synthetic gasket,, still an insulator...

It's not the shock to YOU that you have to worry about. It's the spark to the nozzle of the gas pump that you have to worry about. It's alot more common occurance than you think -- that a small spark ignites a gasoline nozzle. (and then the person freaks out and drops the nozzle, and a few drips cause the fire to get worse, etc. etc.)

When they say "Shut your engine off", they mean it!

It's *not* an old wive's tale.

No. Don't know where that comes from. Unless there's an electrical fault with the pump then there's no charge at all in the gas or any of the equipment.

you don't touch your car to avoid being shocked. you tough your car so that you get all that static electricity off your hands so that when you touch the gas dispenser, you don't spark the gas fumes.

If that was true then I would probably be dead..Cause I never touch my car. Beside when I'm leaving out the car and I touch the door to close it.

It is a really good idea! This way you can be sure to relieve any static electricity. If a spark hits the fumes....boom...you have fire!!
