I know of some conveyor systems that are cofigured similiar to this. These, however, use a type of rubber or plastic rope not a strip or band. Durability is not the real concern. Using a belt in this fashion would cause it to move sideways on the pulley and possibly detach. Placing a groove in the pulley would hold the belt in place, but would create friction and drag. This effects performance.

Let's think about this, shall we?

A regular strip of material would wear out in x hours. Only one side is being worn down by the pulleys.

However, a mobius strip uses "BOTH" sides of the material. Try it. Cut out a long strip of paper, give it a half twist, then fasten the ends. If you draw a pencil line over it, you will see that the strip only has one side (and one edge). So, "both" sides of the material are being used.

HOWEVER, the belt will last the same amount of time. The mobius belt is being worn down on "both" sides, but it takes twice as long to make one full revolution of the belt. So even though the regular belt is only wearing out on one side, it essentially has to wear down twice as far as the mobius belt. Since it is doing twice as many revolutions as the mobius belt, it all cancels out.

as long as the belt does not rub in the middle, it should last
